BACKGROUND OF ALUR KINGDOM

The current King of Alur, His Majesty Rwoth Phillip Olarker Rauni III marks the 33rd King of Alur in the legendary from Nyipir.

He is so far the second youngest King in Uganda, next to King Oyo of Tooro.

According to the hereditary linage Rauni is the most educated King of the Alur with a degree in Bachelor of Science (Hons), Economics and Geography from Loughborough University, United Kingdom.

He is ruling Alur Kingdom  one of the oldest Cultural Institutions in Uganda (1390- 2000 A.D)  alongside Buganda, Bunyoro,Tooro and Nkore.

According to the History, Queen Nyilak the 14th dynasty of Nuer/ Luo Atyak/Alur Kingdoms abdicated the throne for her son, Prince Nyipir in about 1390 A.D after twenty five years of reign at Pajao in the Karuma region in Northern Uganda today.

In order to stimulate development and promote cultural, social and economic development of his people, the Rwoth Ubimu has put in place modern structures of administrative system headed by the Prime Minister (Jadipu) Prince Angala Opar Jalumvor Jalsonge II and composed of highly educated and experienced sons and daughters of the land in positions of responsibility from Cabinet Ministers, Directors, Cultural Envoys, Coordinators, Advisors and Technocrats soon after he was enthroned in 2006.

Ubimu has about 30 ministers who vary in different cabinet responsibilities among them in Ministry of Information and Mobilization to mention but afew.

Ubimu also has chiefs (rwodhi cak) that help to coordinate clans to the bigger Kaal Atyak Palace situated in Okoro County. One of them is Rwoth Emmanuel Kermit Angia of Paidha Omua and Rwoth Said Jal Dolo of Mbaru

RWOTH UBIMU AND THE SUBJECT

Rwoth Ubimu means the king. He is the supreme traditional and cultural leader /spear tip (leb tong) of the Alur people in Nebbi District who whether indigenous or not resident or not and includes those persons in the Diaspora (with in or out side Uganda) Who because of their decent desire to maintain their affinity or roots with the main stream Alur tribe, but excludes those who are merely residents for Economic reasons or purpose of their occupation or livelihood only but continue paying allegiance to their birth places or areas o ancestry outside Alur land.

Each Alur is a subject of Ubimu in the entire counties of Okoro, Padyere and Jonam. Simply put, they are the descendants of the legendary King Nyipir, brother of Labong of the famous bead and spear separation story in Lwo History.

Following the new era of the Alur Institution, the Kingdom has turned modern.

Among new things is the introduction of marriage certificate to concretize relationship of couple.

In late forties and early fifties, many elderly people did not like to be called Alur. To them the name was degrading and they preferred to be called Jalwo. The British found the Alur name from the Arabs in the North of (Sudan and Egypt) and used it to differentiate between the Lwo Atyak people in the west and east of the River Nile – The Alur and The Acholi. It was in the early 20 century when the name Alur became common among the people of the royal families up to date.

The many separations which took place among the Lwo Atyak people in the cause of their migration southwards left the royal spear-head of the Kingdom of the Nuer Lwo Atyak people to remain in the house of King Nyipir the 15th dynasty of the Nuer I Lwo Atyak people up to date.

And the kingdom is referred to as the royal spear-head of Okuru the Alur in Nebbi District.

The oral history gives a list of 18 Kings in the Alur Kingdom from King Nyipir who reigned 1390-1490 A.D. He died at Locjudongo,  Komkech in present day  in Kucwiny Sub- County in Padyere County, Nebbi District, Northern Uganda.
